You got that right. Marathon game sessions when we were snowed in... Oh the good old days. I have all my old stuff and I am teaching my kids to play the old rules, then I will let them decide which they like better when they grow up... sort of like religon... your folks try to get you to follow theirs...then you grow up and make your own choice, but at least you have a foundation. Wow, that was deep.

I too still have all of my old 1e and I guess you would call it 1.5e (Unearthed Arcana/ Oriental Adventures). I know this blog is like 5 years old so I would guess you wont even get this, but it was not that hard to pick up on the 3.5 rule set. I have been playing (mostly as a DM) since the early 80's. I still have my D&D Basic box set (w/ Keep on the Borderlands")
I found it hard to find older gamers who understood the original rules, and after playing so long I had those mostly cmiited to memory. So I evolved to the 3.5. I spent a 2 week period converting my old "Temple of Elemental Evil" to 3.5 and sure as crap, a 3,5 version was published shortly after that (I was a little irritated at that). Anyway, I suffer from insomnia so just felt like replying to your blog.

Viewing the book as a player and a DM, I have to agree that many of the items are unbalanced. What I also have notice is, setting aside the price of the items, many of the items are very redundant. Many of the items are the same items from the DMG with a slight twist and the price cut in half, while most of the rest are very similar to each other, they just have a different duration or use a different body slot. While this may be useful to many players, it does get annoying if you're going through to book looking for a specific item.
I think what I'd do as a DM or even as a player is, if there is an item that I really want, confirm the price with the guidelines in the DMG, just so it's not completely overpowered.

Yes, this was the first for me to play and dm for. I have Broken arrow, black shield, test of the warlord as well. I think they are some of the best stuff. The new D@D is ok, but im old school.I will say I take some of the new and add it to the old ways to make it work. Isle is one of my favs and always will be. It reminds me of good time sitting with friends late at night getting into the the story and having fun without getting into trouble.

If you were to see me today, you wouldn't think I used to be a D&D junkie. Straight-laced and conservatively dressed, I own and operate 2 companies, one of which charges clients millions of dollars to hire new employees each year.

I look back fondly at the times I used to pull out my character sheets, and dice bag, and 10 hours later adjourn until the next time. Moreover, I look fondly at many situations currently where I had to think things out, much like I had to plot my attack on a creature that had a high likelyhood of being able to easily kill me. Gary Gygax was the name on many of the products that I used unknowingly to sharpen my best weapon (my brain). He was responsible for hours of good clean fun in my youth, and possibly a portion of my success today.

RIP Gary.

The curfew tolls, the DM's done --
The dice have ceased to roll.
He's gone where all PC's must go,
May Pelor rest his soul.

WoW geeks! Cease your play; hear me now!
Kneel and silent your LOLS!
Remove your fingers from your keys,
and your lips from your Bawls!
----
It's time those pink thankless pilgrims
Kiss a more sacred pair --
For He has died! He is gone!
give Him His deserved prayer:

For He is the fountain from which
all your epic quests spring!
The true and pure Promethean fire
From which ye derive your being!

He birthed the mighty Tarrasque,
Taught the dragon his smolder,
Mothered the meekest kobolds,
Midwifed the beholder!

It was His pen that wrote the word,
Our first books did He draw,
The manual, handbook, and guide
Thus did He give the law.
----
And still the law remains. Now pray
with me my brother nerds.
Suffcient thanks we can never give
But still i give these words:

Heaven hold you, Gary Gygax!
With mead, cold and plenty!
And should you roll for fortitude
May you roll a twenty!

t_catt11, ironically you are both correct and wrong at the same time. You're right that, if the guidelines and rules and up unbalanced, you should change them. What you're missing is that that's exactly why the Magic Item Compendium exists! Seriously, when have you ever, EVER seen players buy a gem of true-seeing? Even though True Seeing is, in many ways, a necessity for remotely high-level play, even a 20th level character that blows 75,000 GP on the gem ends up crippled.

There may be some minor balance issues, but on the whole, this book plays a vital role: giving important flexibility to parties lacking the four iconic roles without breaking their bank.
